Shatner Treks Into 'Free Enterprise 2'
Sequel to 1998 film in the works
Though no new Star Trek is currently in production by Paramount, the story of two Trek fans and their experiences with William Shatner, who played Captain Kirk, will continue in "Free Enterprise 2," according to IGN Filmforce.
"Ideally we'd like the movie to be ready for release on September 8, 2006," said Robert Meyer Burnett, who wrote and directed the original 1998 film. "That's the anniversary of the first broadcast of "Star Trek's" first episode, "The Man Trap." So, it would be all the more appropriate if we can have the release date be Friday, September 8, 2006."
Will Shatner, who portrayed himself the first time around, be back? "Shatner is waiting for us," said Burnett. "Actually, he wants to come up with some ideas for the sequel."
Burnett won't give away any specifics about the movie's plot, but he confirms that the film will return to the lives of "Star Trek" fans Robert (portrayed by Rafer Weigel) and Mark (played by Eric McCormack). Weigel, McCormack and Audie England have all told Burnett they want to come back for the second film.
"We have a script. It's 100-pages and it's pretty tight," said Burnett. "Mark and I, we're busy but we're still working with it. I wouldn't do this movie without him. Our friendship is key to everything about it."
As he has in the Priceline.com commercials, will Leonard Nimoy will also join the cast? "Believe it or not, we've never approached Nimoy," said Burnett. "Haven't talked with him, but we would like to have him."
Contrary to some Internet rumors, the movie wont' be titled "Free Enterprise 2: My Big Geek Wedding."
Production on the movie, which will also be written and produced by Mark Altman, who worked with Burnett on the first film, is expected start in the spring of 2006.
The original "Free Enterprise" film can be purchased on DVD.
