Brock Peters, Dead At 78
Played Adm. Cartwright, Joseph Sisko in multiple Trek projects
Movie fans knew him as the black man falsely accused of rape in "To Kill a Mockingbird," but he had a special place in the hearts of many Star Trek fans. Brock Peters, known as Adm. Cartwright in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," as well as his recurring role as Joseph Sisko in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine," died Aug. 23 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 78.
Peters first got his big screen break as Sgt. Brown in the 1954 film "Carmen Jones." He later got a role as Crown in the 1959 movie "Porgy and Bess," a film which also featured the singing voice of Loulie Jean Norman, who would later be the famous soprano voice in the original "Star Trek" theme song. Norman died earlier this month.
Peters stayed active throughout his career, and even made appearances in soap operas. He appeared as the character Dr. Bellows in 1966 on "As the World Turns," and later played Frank Lewis for seven years until 1989 on "The Young and the Restless."
His last appearance was in the television movie "The Locket" in 2002. However, he did voice an episode of the cartoon "Static Shock" in 2003.
Besides DS9, Peters' numerous television guest spots included "Mission Impossible" in 1967, "The Bionic Woman" in 1978, and "Battlestar Galactica" in 1979.
He married DiDi Peters in 1961, who died in 1988. They had a daughter together, who survives.
