Brent Spiner Won't Play Data Again
Actor looks to the future on "Threshold"
Although "Nemesis," the tenth film of the Star Trek franchise was a major let down at the box office, there are still strong feelings that Star Trek will return in the not too distant future. Among those who share this view is none other than Lieutenant Commander Data himself, Brent Spiner, who stars in the upcoming CBS series, "Threshold."
The series, which is commonly described as "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Stargate," sees Spiner take on the role of a microbiologist working with the U.S. Navy after a chilling discovery -- aliens are here and Earth might very well be poised on an alien invasion. There is just one catch: the aliens have landed in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Speaking to The Toronto Sun, Spiner talked about his hopes for the series, and also his glee at being able to appear on screen without the aid of a lot of makeup.
"The difference in doing this sci-fi show as opposed to that sci-fi show is probably how classic movie 'Tarzan' Johnny Weismuller felt when he started doing Jungle Jim," he said. "I'm still in the jungle, but this time I get to wear pants."
But what are the chances that Data will be back? Spiner believes those days are behind him and that, should another Trek movie come to pass, Data will not be part of it.
"I'm a guy in his mid-90s," said the 56-year-old actor, laughing. "I don't think it would look great on me anymore."
As for the franchise itself, Spiner believes it will return in some form or another:once is comes out of its hibernation.
"Paramount would not agree that it's dead as a franchise. They have some plan down the line for it to be re-imagined," he said.
"Threshold" will air on Friday nights at 9 p.m. this fall on CBS.
