Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, scripters for the upcoming Steven Spielberg "Transformers" live-action film, have revealed just which robots will appear, according to IGN.
They will include Optimus Prime, Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave, Starscream, Jazz, Bumblee and R.C. "Right now, we're thinking there will be five Autobots and five Decepticons," said Kurtzman. "There's going to be a lot of them. You're going to have 10 Transformers in that movie, and if that's not enough, you can go see 2, 3, 4 or 5."
"The meat and potatoes are going to be in there," Orci said. "We're just missing the premise for the sequels."
Responding to speculation that the film had been put on a back burner as the pair heads to Rome to work on the next "Mission: Impossible" movie, Kurtzman said that significant progress on the "Transformers" project continues to be made.
"'Transformers' is very tricky, because it's a movie based on a toy line," he said. "The first question you have to ask yourself is, what's the movie? We sat down with Steven Spielberg, and we said that the action scenes in this movie are a given, but he said that it's the story of a boy and his car and that he wants to bring back the old Amblin movies."
"It's a real challenge because the key to making those movies work--and I totally think it's why 'War of the Worlds' works so well--is to be so invested in the people and to maintain the subjectivity of the humans," he said. "If you start 'Transformers' with giant robots sitting in a spaceship flying through space, your movie is dead in the water. It's all about keeping it at a human level, and seeing the amazing things that are going on through the eyes of the characters."
Will Michael Bay direct the movie? While it isn't finalized yet, Kurtzman and Orci hope he will, though Bay wants to see a script before he commits to it.
"We're in the middle of writing it," Kurtzman said. "There's nothing that came before it. It's a movie that's based on a toy line, so the trick with that movie was again figuring out, 'Okay, what's the character story here because the action scenes are a given, so what is this story really going to be about?'"
"Transformers" is scheduled to be released in theaters on November 17, 2006.
