Could EnterpriseJump To The Big Screen?

Bakula ready to sign on for a movie

When UPN announced the cancelation of the latest incarnation of the legendary Star Trek series, many believed that would be the end. But even that didnt stop many fans campaigning for Star Trek: Enterprises future.

Little did they expect that the future they wanted could be in the form of a movie.

Enterprise actor Scott Bakula, who plays Capt. Jonathan Archer, said there were plans for a movie based on the prequel series. However, those plans were shelved after new management took over at Paramount Pictures, which owns the rights to the Star Trek franchise. But should that project get going again, Bakula said he is ready to sign-up.

"It's something I would be interested in doing," Bakula said at the show's wrap party last week. "They haven't asked, but the reality is that Paramount has been under such internal upheaval in the last year that right now there's really nobody that's there that is a fan of Star Trek."

The actor said that the regime change at Paramount has eroded a lot of support for Trek projects and its anyones guess as to what will happen to the franchise.

"Obviously it's been very important to that studio for a great number of years and brought a lot of revenue for them, Bakula said. But I'm not sure how they will re-address or kind of re-approach it as the dust settles. But we'll see."

This coming television season will be the first since the debut of Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987 without an original Trek series on the air or a movie in planning. The last Trek movie, Star Trek: Nemesis proved a disappointment at the box office and Enterprise has struggled with its ratings since the second season.

However, Bakula said he believes Enterprise could make the transition to the big screen, adding that all it needs is some interest from the studio.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on UPN. Its series finale is scheduled for May 13.
