Eccleston Quits 'Doctor Who'
News comes after series picked up for second season
One episode has aired in the United Kingdom, but the star of the updated "Doctor Who" series is done.
Christopher Eccleston has pulled out of the British "Doctor Who" project on BBC after filming a good portion of the first season. The 10 million viewers who tuned in for the premiere on BBC prompted network officials to renew the show for a second season, assuming that Eccleston was aboard. It is unclear if the role will be recast, or if BBC will withdraw the second season order. Talks are reportedly taking place with actor David Tennant to take over the role.
Eccleston is the ninth actor to play the role over the last 40 years. He said he was afraid of being typecast.
Eccleston's co-star, Billie Piper, apparently don't share those same concerns, and is expected to return as Doctor Who's assistant, Rose.
BBC reports that Eccleston's last appearance on the show will be a Christmas special.
