Trek Is No Longer On Paramounts Agenda

Bakula talks about the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise

Its the last of a long line of shows based on Star Trek, which first aired in the 1960s. But now that the series is coming to a close, Star Trek: Enterprise star Scott Bakula (Capt. Jonathon Archer) talks about the show's cancellation.

Well, I'm disappointed, and everyone involved with the show is disappointed," he said. "Obviously we're all very emotionally attached to the show and we're all having a great time making the show. So you would like that kind of a situation to continue.

Unfortunately we don't fit into UPN's business plan and really haven't for the last two-and-a-half years. So that's a situation that's out of our control, and ultimately, has no reflection on our show or the quality of our show. Or the commitment of all of our fans.

Bakula also added that it was Gary Hart, president or Paramount, who should be thanked for helping get the fourth season in production in the first place.

When asked about campaigning to save the series, Bakula confessed he isnt sure what fans can do to make a difference other than simply tuning in and watching the series as it closes. The actor also mentioned that the possibility of shopping the series to another network was remote and that Paramount is content to let the show go out quietly.

They have a much bigger agenda and mandate from CBS to make new television shows for CBS and UPN. And once again, we don't fit the bill, Bakula said. It is ironic that with our numbers, and with our fan support, we would be very successful on Sci-Fi Channel or USA Network or almost any of the cablers.

As for the rest of the cast, many are disappointed by the news after such a good season, which has for the most part, been very well received, he said.

Everyone's felt (executive producer) Manny Coto has really worked very hard to keep us going along with (executive producers) Rick Berman and Brannon Braga, but we are grateful and very aware that for all intents and purposes we should not have even had a fourth season, he said.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on UPN. It will air it's final episode on May 13.
