Phlox Actor Says 'Enterprise' Dead
John Billingsley is not expecting a renewal
There is a lot of talk on whether or not there will be a fifth season of "Star Trek: Enterprise" on UPN. But if anyone was going to ask John Billingsley -- who plays Phlox in the series -- the answer would be no.
In an interview with the Ventury County Star in California, Billingsley said the show is all but dead now.
"I have a fairly pragmatic attitude," he said. "I look at the economics."
Among the things contributing to Billingsley's attitude are the tanking ratings the show has been receiving on Friday nights as well as the fact that Paramount Television now has 100 episodes ready to go for the series, which recently helped with its syndication sale to about 90 percent of the country. But even with a syndication sale, that will do little to help convince UPN to go for a fifth season.
"My feeling is that after all these years, the people who are not watching Star Trek won't start watching," he said. "We're not going to be the movie franchise."
On Jan. 21, "Enterprise" suffered its lowest overnight ratings of its entire run, but last night's opening to a three-episode arc -- "Babel One" -- saw a slight increase in viewership. However, numbers are still far below where they would have to be in order to guarantee a network pickup.
UPN has yet to make a decision on the fate of the series. "Star Trek: Enterprise" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on UPN.
