Anyone expecting William Shatner to come back in time for the season (and possibly series) finale of "Star Trek: Enterprise" on UPN might as well give up.

Several Web sites are reporting that the Shatner deal is pretty much dead, and instead, producers are looking to bring back a couple familiar faces from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- Jonathan Frakes and Marina Sirtis.

"Marina and Jonathan Frakes will reprise their roles as guest stars on [the] 'Enterprise' season finale," the official Marina Sirtis Web site reported.

TrekToday reported that a deal to bring the two on the series is indeed in the works, but it is unclear exactly what kind of characters they will be playing.

Since ending their days on TNG in 1994, the two have appeared in four Star Trek films as well as making various appearances in the later Trek spinoffs including "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and "Star Trek: Voyager." Frakes has been spending most of his time in the director's chair, most recently directing the Hollywood dud "Thunderbirds." Sirtis was last seen in the 2004 movie "Lesser of Three Evils." Both appeared in the most recent franchise film, "Star Trek: Nemesis," which bombed in the box office in 2002.

In other news surrounding the series, a longtime producer apparently is calling it quits.

Merri Howard -- who has been a part of the Star Trek team since 1987 when she joined "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- will be stepping down from her duties on "Enterprise" at the end of this season.

Howard started out as an assistant director on TNG, working her way up to line producer before moving on to "Star Trek: Voyager" in 1995. There she became a co-supervising producer, and later a supervising producer, which she continues to be on "Enterprise."

As a supervising producer, Howard chooses directors and works with editors to complete episodes on time and on budget.

"Star Trek: Enterprise" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on UPN.
