Coto Says There Really Could Be A Fifth Season
SPOILERS: Fans also could see the formation of Section 31
The following story contains MODERATE SPOILERS for the fourth season finale of "Star Trek: Enterprise."
Season 4 of "Star Trek: Enterprise" has been a fan's dream. Many issues from the early seasons of the UPN series and from past Star Trek series have been addressed under executive producer Manny Coto, and he doesn't plan to end anytime soon.
Talking about the arc that will end the fourth season, Coto said he's looking to bring back a familiar environment.
"We'd like to bring our sights back to Earth, to feature areas or landscapes of Starfleet we haven't seen, the Martian colony, the moon colony, our own solar system," Coto recently told the Chicago Tribune. "The final story (of the season) will be mankind overcoming its own prejudices, to begin this process of [founding] the Federation. The last challenge will be ourselves."
What will the show see in its final episodes? How about yet another visit to the original series' "Mirror, Mirror," which got its own story arc on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
"We're really excited about that one," he said. "It'll be as if you changed the channel to 'Enterprise' and you get the mirror universe version of the show. We're even going to change the title sequence. People will be wondering, what show is this?"
It's unclear whether or not William Shatner (Capt. Kirk, "Star Trek") will be on this season, but Coto said he's not closing the door on a possible return of Brent Spiner (Data, "Star Trek: The Next Generation").
In the upcoming Klingon story arc, where the reason why some Klingons had flat foreheads is expected to be explained, Coto said that fans might see the formation of the secretive Federation organization Section 31, first featured in "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
So, the big question, however ... will there be a fifth season?
UPN entertainment president Dawn Ostroff said ... well, said nothing. Giving non-commital corporate speak, Ostroff said that "Enterprise" was generating "great feedback from the fans."
"The show is at a great place (creatively) and we're very happy with the ideas and execution."
"Star Trek: Enterprise" airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on UPN.
