Joss Whedon Could Do 'Wonder Woman'

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter could battle for role

It appears that Twentieth Century Fox may have lost yet another battle to DC Comics and Warner Bros.

Just months after director Bryan Singer bolted the X-Men franchise to take over the struggling Superman project, it looks like another director rumored to be sought after for the X-Men director's chair might be joining Singer's side.

Joss Whedon, best known for creating "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," is said to be tapped to direct the proposed "Wonder Woman" movie for Warner Bros., according to Britain's The Daily Record.

Whedon has been deflecting speculation that he would replace Singer for "X-Men 3." Whedon has been known for his writing talents in multiple media, including the recent X-Men comic book series. He told fans back in October that he had not been approached to do X-Men, but rumors continued to circulate.

But with Whedon now attached to a DC Comics product, it's unlikely that Fox will be able to bring in Whedon in time for a 2006 release in the X-Men franchise.

So who would Whedon cast for the role? It seems that Whedon may stick with actresses he's familiar with.

It's been reported that former "Buffy" stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy Summers) and Charisma Carpenter (Cordelia Chase) are being considered for the role, with Gellar getting top priority.

"Joss has told the studio that Sarah is his first choice followed by Charisma," an insider told the British tabloid. "Sarah expressed an interest, but the producers are more interested in Charisma because she is less well-known."

Whedon is wrapping up post-production on "Serenity," his motion picture based on his failed Fox series "Firefly." It's scheduled for a September release.
