'Serenity' Gets Pushed Back To September
Busy film market in April forces change in schedule
Want to see what the "Firefly" crew from the cancelled Fox series has been up to? Well, you'll have to wait a little longer.
"Serenity" director Joss Whedon, who created the "Firefly" series the movie is based on, said that Universal Pictures is now holding the film until September.
"Well, it's official" On April 22, you, the true the blue the loyal, can step right up with the rest of American and wait five more months," Whedon said on a post to Whedonesque. "So, what happened? Well, nothing terribly original. April got crowded with a lot of titles aimed at a similar demographic, and the studio decided September was a clearer corridor for the film to make the kind of impact it should. This isn't about a lack of confidence in the film -- in fact, they told me this before they even saw it. And now they have seen it, and unless they're way better liars than I'm used to, they dug it. Actually, they dug it pretty large, which is a good sign since there's not a single finished effect in the film."
Thanks to strong DVD sales of the series, which had a very short life on Fox, Universal agreed to pick up the movie with Whedon attached as the writer and the director. Despite the fact that Whedon has done considerable work in his creation of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and his co-creation of its spinoff, "Angel," this is Whedon's big-screen directorial debut.
The movie, which is currently in post-production, reunites the cast that includes Nathan Fillion as Capt. Malcolm Reynolds, Gina Torres as Zoe Warren and Summer Glau as River Tam.
"I love this movie," Whedon said. "I hate waiting to show it to you. I felt pretty much the way I imagine you're feeling right now when they told me. But these guys know what they're doing, and they're trying to protect their investment, not bury it. So I gotta be a grownup. The release date is Sept. 30. Hopefully, it won't change again."
