Takei Speaks Out On 'Enterprise'

Sulu actor talks to fans about current state of the franchise

George Takei, who might be best known for his portrayal of Hikaru Sulu on Star Trek, recently sat down with USA Today and answered some fan questions concerning his role in the Star Trek series and subsequent movies, as well as the current state of the franchise.

In the period leading up to the announcement of Star Trek: Enterprise, many existing Star Trek fans had been petitioning for a series centered around Capt. Sulu, which Takei supported. But such a series of Sulu on the U.S.S. Excelsior never came to be, something which the actor said he still feels strongly about.

I don't get why Paramount never started that series when the fan input strongly supported a Sulu series, he said. Why invite fan input when you're going to be deaf to that?

When asked about the current state of the franchise Takei said that the fan support seems to indicate that it is starting to fade. The box office for the last movie was the worst yet and Enterpriseratings is the lowest yet. So that may be a measure that we have traveled the whole arc.

Even with a seemingly bleak view on Enterprise, the actor didnt rule out any future appearances on the series or any future Star Trek movies.

I would love to do any of them but the decision isn't mine," Takei said. "It's up to the studio to write Sulu into those scripts. But you can write Paramount and make that eminently wise and good suggestion.
