'Resident Evil' Murders Competition
Sequel has good weekend at American box office
"Resident Evil: Apocalypse" made a killing at the American box office this weekend, it's $23.7 million haul being more than enough for competitors on its opening weekend.
The film, starring Milla Jovovich, knocked the Jet Li film "Hero" out of the top spot to take the weekend win. "Cellular," the weekend's only other new release, finished in second with $10.6 million.
According to CNN, the overall $64.7 million gross this weekend is down 11 percent from this time a year ago.
Next weekend should be an interesting time for genre moviegoers when "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" starring Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. That movie has seen numerous delays over the last few months because of problems in post-production.
"Apocalypse" is the sequel to 2002 film, which finished with $40 million. The sequel opened much higher than the $17.7 million opening of the first film, inspired by the video game.
