Coto Bridges The Gap
'Enterprise' executive producer takes control
With a questionable future, UPNs "Star Trek: Enterprise" has been forced to make yet another series of tough decisions, but this time, Executive Producer Manny Coto is at the helm.
As a self-proclaimed fan of the original series, Coto has announced that he will try to bring the series back inline, with the values fans have seen in that series, and then in the next incarnation, "Star Trek: The Next Generation."
"I'm a fan of the original 'Star Trek,' and Season 4 for me is going to be everything I, as an old Star Trek fan, would want to see on 'Enterprise,' which is basically a lot of touchstones connecting 'Enterprise' with the old series and with the 'Next Generation' series," Coto said Coto during UPN's fall press tour in Los Angeles.
For longtime fans of the show, there will be some interesting developments, including some original series aliens will be re-appearing, the planet Vulcan will face a revolution, and then the foundations will be laid for the United Federation of Planets.
Among the aliens returning to the waves will be the green-skinned Orions, who were first introduced in "Shadowplay," as well as the Andorians and Vulcans.
"A lot of people have noticed that the Vulcans on 'Enterprise' don't behave like the Vulcans from the Kirk era and/or the 'Next Generation' era," Coto said. "The Vulcans on 'Enterprise' are more impulsive. They actually are somewhat more emotional. They lie. They don't have the same kind of values [of] the Vulcans that we know of."
Coto also shed some light on how he plans to bridge the gap between the two eras. For the Vulcans, Coto said he has an idea for a multi-episode arc, involving a character similar to Lawrence of Arabia, who claims that the Vulcans are no longer following the teachings as they once did.
"And this character will lead a revolution on Vulcan, which will bring Vulcan and Vulcan ideals to where we know them in the later series," Coto said. "And 'Enterprise' will get involved in this."
Naturally, as a result of the change on Vulcan, the tense situation with the Andorians changes, bringing the two races closer together. Coto also added that there will be some mysterious dissidents on the planet Vulcan attempting to stir up a civil war, who will later be revealed to have been Romulans.
"That's an example of the kinds of stories that we're going to tell this season," Coto said.
"Star Trek: Enterprise" returns to the airwaves in September, and can be seen Friday nights on UPN.
