DreamWorks, Paramount Pick Up 'Transformers'
Expected to be released in Summer 2006
It's good when rumors are true.
Don Murphy, a producer on the new "Transformers" project, recently made an announcement that there there would me a major announcement at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego regarding the live-action film. Of course, as soon as that announcement was teased, rumors circulated that it would be to announce that DreamWorks would be producing the movie. Well, those rumors were close.
Before Murphy could make his big announcement in San Diego, both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter have published reports that both DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures will bring the movie to life, hopefully by Summer 2006.
According to the reported deal, DreamWorks will handle all U.S. distribution of the film, while Paramount will handle the international markets.
There is no director yet, but DreamWorks co-founder Steven Spielberg will join Murphy and X-Men's Tom DeSanto as an executive producer.
Rumors were that Hasbro, which produces the toy line of Transformers, were sold on the idea completely recently when Murphy's and DeSanto's special effects team presented a spec special effects shot that reportedly featured a redesigned Optimus Prime. Hasbro apparently will maintain an active role in the development of the movie.
