Is 'Star Trek' Boldly Returning To Big Screen?

Star Trek producer talks about possibility of a new Trek movie

Many fans worldwide thought that the adventures of the Enterprise crew had seen their final frontier through "Star Trek: Nemesis" in 2002, which received a mixed reception at the box office. But now it appears that the Trek franchise has just received a breath of life from embattled Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman.

"There is a film concept that is in discussion, I am very much involved in it," Berman said. "It's in the very early stages of development, so it's really too early to talk about."

Berman refused to give away any specific details of the project, other than the fact that it can be dubbed a "prequel." This has only helped to fuel the already well-circulated rumors started via the influential Aint It Cool News Web site, that Paramount is working to develop a trilogy of Star Trek-based prequel films.

"I can understand why Ain't It Cool News would get information about it being a prequel trilogy," Berman said. "That's not quite correct, although I can understand how someone might misinterpret the information to be that."

At this stage, it is impossible to say what form this prequel will take, but so far, it appears to be totally unconnected to the UPN series "Star Trek: Enterprise," which enters its fourth season this fall.
