Could 'Ripper' Still Be A Possibility?
Anthony Stewart Head discusses the proposed Giles spin-off
For seven years he has been Buffys stuffy English Watcher, guiding her in the ways of the Slayer. But what are the possibilities that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer's" Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head) will step out on his own?
The concept of a Giles-centered television series has been floating in limbo since Heads departure from the regular "Buffy" cast in its sixth season. All parties seem interested, but what exactly is going on?
Speaking to The Official Buffy Magazine, Head revealed some news of the future of the project, which has been rumored to be a six-episode series, with each episode lasting for two hours.
"We still talk about [Ripper]," the actor said. "[Creator Joss Whedon] came over to Britain to see the shows I was doing, 'Pirates of Penzance' and 'Peter Pan,' and Alyson's (Hannigan, Willow) 'When Harry Met Sally,' so we all went out together a couple of times. He has an idea that I thought would work very well. It means the project is still alive -- still something that Joss wants to do. He wants to make a two-hour TV movie."
The cancellation of "Angel" means that the 2004-05 season will be the first season in eight years without a Buffyverse project on the air. But if the proposed "Ripper" never gets the go, there always are the animated adventures.
"It was great fun doing the voicing with Joss and Jeph (Loeb) on the other end of the phone line," Head said. "I wondered how I would play it, and whether it would be different just playing the voice. It wasn't -- I just put the glasses on and there he was. I've read between six and eight scripts (for 'Buffy: Animated') and they are very funny. It's got a different feel from what one has seen before."
If "Ripper" does go ahead, it will most likely be produced in England by the BBC.
