Spider-Man Makes Light Of Bad Publicity
Keep in line about Spidy's back
Like inside jokes? So does Sam Raimi.
The director of the upcoming Spider-Man sequel has said that a little inside joke made it into the film, taking on some of the publicity the film received in pre-production about star Toby Maguire's back
"Yes, there's a joke in the picture where Tobey [as Peter Parker] is trying to get his powers back," Raimi said in a press briefing for the film. "He jumps through the air and says, 'I'm back! I'm back!' But he doesn't really have his powers completely back, and he falls, hurts his back, and then he says, 'My back! My back!'"
Raimi insists that his brother, Ivan, wrote it before last year's incident where rumors were circulating that Maguire was going to be replaced in the film because of a bad back he got while filming "Seabiscuit." However, he said he still felt bad about it.
"After writing it, we said, 'Oh, my God, maybe we shouldn't do that, because of the problems with Tobey's back,'" he said. "And then we said, 'No, it'll be really funny if we did do that. It'd be fun for the people who do know about that problem, and because it was thought up independently, it might be fun for people who don't.' I hope it's fun."
"Spider-Man 2" opens June 30.
