'Mutant X,' 'Andromeda' Could Be Gone

Closing of Fireworks production company main cause

Two series produced by the Canadian production company Fireworks appears to be going down with the ship.

CanWest Global Communications earlier this week announced that it would be closing Fireworks and would sell its library of productions, which include "Adventure Inc.," "La Femme Nikita" and "Highlander: The Raven." Fireworks also produces "Mutant X" and "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda," and apparently those two productions will cease as well.

According to IGN Filmforce, the demand for such series has declined over the years, which has produced a rising debt for Fireworks. While both series could be picked up by other producers, it's highly unlikely.

"Andromeda" currently is being joint produced with Sci-Fi Channel, but it's unlikely that Sci-Fi will put out the resources to fund it fully. Karen Cliche, whoc plays Lexa Pierce in "Mutant X," said over the weekend that her show has stopped production as well.

Both series were supposed to be the continuation of a strong original-run syndication market that became big after the success of "Star Trek: The Next Generation." "Earth: Final Conflict" started a trend of using work from the late "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, and "Andromeda" brought in "Hercules" star Kevin Sorbo to head the science-fiction series.

However, those shows started to see some tremendous problems with casting and crew. EFC went through several major casting changes through its five-year run, while "Andromeda" lost its executive producer -- Robert Hewitt Wolfe -- early on, and then later lost co-producer Ethlie Ann Vare, who had come over from EFC.

"Mutant X" wasn't without its problems. It lasted through a drawn out court battle with Twentieth Century Fox over copyright infringement with The X-Men franchise, saying there were too many simliarities. "Mutant X's" production company later admitted that there were some similarities between the two.
