New Series To Follow 'Van Helsing' Universe
'Transylvania' will appear on NBC
Although Hugh Jackman's "Van Helsing" is not out in theaters yet, NBC already is planning on a sort-of spinoff television series that will be set in the same universe.
Sci-Fi Wire is reporting that Bob Ducsay, a producer for "Van Helsing," that his new series will be called "Transylvania."
"It's the world of Van Helsing," Ducsay told the site. "It takes place in the late 1800s, like 'Van Helsing,' and it takes place in Transylvania. But none of the characters intersect. It's actually a new idea that just takes place in the world (of the movie)."
The series also will involve Stephen Sommers, who is both the writer and director of the "Van Helsing" movie.
"One day, we were just sitting on the (Prague) set which (production designer) Allan Cameron had built this fantastic village for, and I'm like, 'I'd hate to tear this down.'" Sommers said. "I mean, it's so fantastic, and I'd hate to bulldoze it. 'We ought to do something with it. Let's do a television show!' And that's when my wheels start spinning."
The film version stars Jackman ("X-Men"), who plays a vampire hunter in 19th-century Europe. It also has Kate Beckinsale ("Underworld"), as well as many monsters from the Universal Studios vault.
The series will be executive produced by David Fury from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." NBC already has ordered six episodes, plus a pilot.
