Boreanaz Says He's Glad It's Over

Freedom is good for former 'Angel' star

David BoreanazWhile fans might be angry that The WB is cancelling "Angel" after five years, one person is a bit ... happy. And that's Angel himself.

David Boreanaz, who originated the character in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" before getting his own spinoff, said that he is going to enjoy having freedom to do other projects.

"This is the way business is," Boreanaz told Nine MSN. "Like I said when I started the show, I worked on scene to scene, show to show. My commitment to it was 22 episodes each season, and when that's done, I'd consider it over. So it was actually a big relief for me and, personally, it gave me a big sense of freedom. I felt like a big weight had been lifted from my shoulders."

Boreanaz said there's a lot of pressure in carrying a show for more than 100 episodes.

"I don't owe anybody anything," he said. "I owe myself and my family. So for me, I feel like, 'Oh, I don't have to hold that cross anymore.' As heavy as it may be or as light as it may be, it's not a negative. It's a good thing."

But Boreanaz said he is not uncaring about what fans are feeling.

"I felt bad for the fans," he said. "When the producers took the show and re-tooled it in a way that took it in a different direction, it should have been the responsibility of the network to put a keen interest into it during that time. So I don't think they handled it in the classiest way. And the fans are the people the network really screwed over."

"Angel" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The WB. It will leave the airwaves in May.
