Borg Invasion Opens In Las Vegas
Features actors from 'Star Trek: Voyager,' 'Star Trek: First Contact'
Most people go to Las Vegas for the gambling or their quicky marriages to Britney Spears. But for those of us geeks who can't gamble to save our lives, or would never be caught dead with Britney, now there's something new.
The Borg Invasion 4D attraction at the Las Vegas Hilton -- home of the Star Trek Experience -- opened Thursday after an advertising blitz that made more people aware of the new attraction's existence, than the existence of "Star Trek: Enterprise."
During the media opening on Wednesday, comedian and former "Seinfeld" actor Jason Alexander was a part of the dignitaries that joined in the event.
"I have been a huge Star Trek fan, huge fan of this franchise for a very long time," Alexander told the media, according to StarTrek.com. "In fact, many of you might now know this -- when I first came to Hollywood back in 1963, I was one of the very first people to audition for the role of Capt. James T. Kirk," he joked. "To this day, I do not understand how it went to (William) Shatner. I think I was a little thinner than him. But he does do a better version of 'Rocket Man' than I do."
The feature stars Kate Mulgrew and Robert Picardo, who played Capt. Janeway and The Doctor in UPN's first series, "Star Trek: Voyager." It also features Alice Krige, who played the Borg Queen in the series finale of "Voyager," as well as the introduction of the role in "Star Trek: First Contact."
According to a press release, the attraction has a long list of firsts as well. LIke it being the first Star Trek production ever shot digitally; the first all-digital motion picture to incorporate live action and animation within a three-dimensional cinema environment; the first multiple-angle 3-D cinema production with 3-D effects from the front, overhead and both right and left sides of the audience; first time a Steadicam has ever been used in a 3-D production; and it's the first worldwide attraction to use the 2K digital cinema projection, which produces a clearer resolution than any other digital projection system in the world.
Tickets for both "Borg Invasion" and "Klingon Encounter" at the Las Vegas Hilton start at $29.99. For more information, visit www.startrekexp.com.
