'Angel' Move To UPN Doubtful
PLUS: Movie of the week probably won't happen either
When The WB cancelled "Angel" a couple weeks ago, it left open the door for possible movie of the weeks down the road featuring the cast of the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" spinoff.
But anyone holding their breath over that or a possible move to UPN should stop, at least according to executive producer David Fury.
"I think there's some time (that) would have to pass before we'd seriously start considering it," Fury told Sci-Fi Wire. He said that when co-creator Joss Whedon heard the offer to do the movies, he wondered who would be around to do it.
"He's going to be off doing a motion picture, 'Firefly,' and he'll be consumed with that for some time," Fury said. "And presumably everybody else on the show will have moved on to other projects, although we'd love to continue to work together, and we will try to, I'm sure, in our various capacities. But as far as the movies go, I don't expect you'll hear anything announced about that for another year. And by that time, again, everybody will have moved on, actors and writers. And it just may be a hard thing to actually realize."
There have been some reports that UPN may consider picking up the series, and Fury said that yes, talks were taking place with UPN. However, he held little hope for that to happen, either.
"There were and are conversations going on with UPN," Fury said of the network, which also picked up the final two seasons of "Buffy."
"But in all likelihood, they don't have the financial wherewithal to continue the series. It's less expensive than 'Buffy' was for them, but trying to bring a show that's going to be going into its sixth season, it's not really financially responsible for them to pick up a show that doesn't really have much of a future beyond one more season."
And for his third strike, Fury said it was unlikely that "Buffy" star Sarah Michelle Gellar would return by the end of the "Angel" series. The actress currently is in Japan filming "The Grudge" and probably will not be available before filming ends.
"Angel" airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET on The WB.
