Don't Expect Gay Character In 'Enterprise'
Dominic Keating waves off the possibility
When TV Guide was first reporting about the latest Star Trek series, "Enterprise," back in 2001, one of the rumors was that the ship's main security officer -- Malcolm Reed -- would be gay.
That never panned out, and Dominic Keating, who plays the character, told fans recently that they shouldn't hold their breath for one in the future.
"I think (it's) doubful, sorry boys," Keating said during a chat at StarTrek.com. "I don't think the powers that be would be comfortable introducing that element into their present format. A well-dressed cat amongst the pigeons."
Outside of the fact that Reed never became a gay character, Keating said his character has grown quite a bit over the three seasons of the UPN show.
"Well, I suppose, originally, you might have been allowed to think that he was a bit two-dimensional," Keating said. "And if anything, what's transpired over the last three years is the fleshing out of a third dimension. And I look a little older!"
