Roddenberry.com Gets Overhaul

Store still remains closed, however

While many fans are anxiously awaiting the return of the Roddenberry.com store, the Web site itself has made some changes.

The site, which can be found at www.roddenberry.com introduces a new look to the site which has remained largely unchanged for the last four years.

Roddenberry.com is run by Eugene W. Roddenberry, son of Majel Barrett Roddenberry and the late Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. It also will eventually contain the Roddenberry.com store, but that project remains closed while Roddenberry works out a new licensing agreement with Viacom, owner of the Star Trek franchise.

The new site lists upcoming events like conventions that Roddenberry will be appearing at, as well as family birthdays. It also has a page full of links (including one to Airlock Alpha) as well as a new three-dimensional game created by Julian Urbach of Julesworld LLC, which pays homage to the old Star Trek computer games of the 1980s.

The game is part of a new feature called Roddenberry's Universe Online, which is the first in a line of OTOY releases.

"OTOYs is a new concept in online multiplayer gaming," the site said. "When all elements of the gaming engine are completed later this year, individuals will be able to play real-time arcade games via the Internet while instant messaging their opponent. In fact, today's instant messaging services such as (AOL Instant Messenger) and Yahoo! will be integrated into the entire OTOYs service."

Through the site, Roddenberry said that the current game on the site might seem simplistic compared to today's XBOX and Playstation games, but it is in fact state-of-the-art because of the compression technology used to bring it to life.

"OTOYs has jumped this hurdle and now promises hi-resolution multiplayer online games similar to that of today's home consoles," the site said. "The Roddenberry's Universe Online game currently featured on Roddenberry.com runs at 30 fps and has a file size of less than 1.5 Mb. These specs really don't mean anything until you see the game for yourself."

The game is located at http://games.roddenberry.com.

Airlock Alpha has been indirectly involved in Roddenberry.com's new look as well. Bryant Griffin, Airlock Alpha's lead graphic artist who is best known for designing the site's now famous logo, has been busy making new logos for Roddenberry, with one featured for the Star Trek Dive Club that Roddenberry is starting. Also, Griffin is working on a slight revamp of the main Roddenberry logo currently featured on the site.
