Shatner: Star Trek Is Finally Ending
Iconic actor feels franchise is running out of steam
As if Star Trek needed another nail in its coffin, it got it from former "Star Trek" star William Shatner.
Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk in the original series as well as seven movies, told Astrobiology Magazine that the current state of Star Trek would have caused "no end of grief" to the late franchise creator Gene Roddenberry.
"Unfortunately, the current product seems to have come to an end," Shatner said. "I think perhaps the producers missed the essentials of Star Trek. That is, the colorful characters in conflict with each other and the outer world."
Shatner also commented that the first Star Trek film, "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was still quite long, and that he wouldn't have minded playing a mutant in the 2003 film, "X2: X-Men United."
Also, when asked if he would accept a place on the space shuttle if NASA were to ever call him, he said he would not be too keen on the idea.
"No, thank you!" Shatner said. "I've developed claustrophobia and I have sleep apnea."
