'Matrix Revolutions' Tops At Box Office
Debut only half of 'Reloaded' audience, however
Altough there was a significant decline over numbers posted in May with the second movie in the franchise, "The Matrix Revolutions" still finished at the top of the domestic and foreign box office over the weekend, helping the entire trilogy push hard toward the $1 billion mark.
The movie made $50.2 million over its opening weekend, and $85.5 million domestically since Wednesday, easily dominating the top spot in the American box office. The numbers, however, were down nearly 45 percent from "The Matrix Reloaded" last May, which earned $91.8 million on its opening weekend, and $134.2 million in its first four days.
"Anytime you have a billion dollars in box office, that's pretty impressive," said Joel Silver, producer of the film. "I don't know how you point a fignger and say there's anything wrong there."
The film was released in 109 countries, and surpassed $204 million in five days around the world. It beat out the previous worldwide opening record holder "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" by about $4 million.
