What Is Fact And What Is Fiction?
New section premieres for a limited time in Message Boards
After 40 years, there have been many stories associated with Star Trek, but the question is, what is fact and what is fiction?
That is a question that Michael Hinman had been wondering, too, and now he is taking some of the popular stories that have circulated for years around Star Trek, and turned them into a limited engagement on the Airlock Alpha message boards.
Called "Legends: Fact or Fiction," the board is currently under construction, and has opened with three slightly-dramatized stories based on rumors that have been spread about the back scenes of Star Trek. Some of the stories are true, some of them are not.
By Oct. 23, there will be seven stories on the message boards where visitors can guess which stories are true, and which stories are not. They also have an opportunity to post their own stories that they have heard, and try to determine if they really are fact or fiction as well.
The stories will be part of a panel at Necronomicon, a science-fiction/fantasy convention taking place in Tampa, Fla, which Hinman is a guest at (and which Airlock Alpha is a sponsor). One of Hinman's panels this year there will be "Star Trek Legends: Fact or Fiction," inspired by the Jonathan Frakes-hosted show, "Beyond Belief."
These stories will be presented in panel discussion and at the end, Hinman will reveal there if they are fact or fiction. However, they will not be revealed on the boards as long as discussion is active on the topic.
Currently, this feature is a limited engagement, but if it's popular enough, it may become a permanent fixture with other myths from inside and outside the science fiction world being added.
