LOTR Films Returning To Big Screen

'Fellowship' and 'Towers' making a comeback

Starting Aug. 26, fans will be able to have both "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" on DVD. And if some were so inclined, they even have the expanded version of the first movie, which incorporated the cut scenes, and required two DVDs to get the whole movie in.

But beginning in December, fans will have a chance to see both movies in their full glory ... on a football field-sized screen.

New Line Cinema, which is releasing all three films, including the final "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" on Dec. 17, announced they were bringing the other two films back to the big screen, complete with additional scenes and footage, according to a report in Variety. But if you want to see it again, you better be near a big city.

The film studio said that it would like to put both movies on about 100 to 150 screens in the top 10 U.S. markets. Other U.S. cities will be able to participate, however, as New Line would like to have a single cinema participating in the special extended edition screenings. Advanced ticket sales are scheduled to begin in late September or early October.

Beginning Dec. 5, "Fellowship of the Rings" will be released in about 100 theaters in the U.S. and about 20 theaters in Canada. After that, on Dec. 12, the "Two Towers will rehit that limited number of theaters, leading up to a daylong marathon Dec. 16, during which all the films will be shown back-to-back- ... to-back.

The markets the film will be shown in has not been released.
