Xindi Introduced As Five Different Species

Will challenge 'Enterprise' makeup department

So, how diverse will the Xindi, the new alien foe of UPN's "Enterprise" be? Try five different species, and five different looks.

Series co-creator Brannon Braga told Sci-Fi Wire that the Xindi will probably provide the biggest challenge yet for Michael Westmore and his prostethic makeup crew. The five species are described as humanoid, reptile, sloth, insectoid and aquatic. The sloth will have evolved from a furry, arboreal creature, or an arboreal primate.

However, Westmore only will be involved with three of the species. Similar to Species 8472 in "Star Trek: Voyager," the insectoids and aquatics will have to be computer-generated, while the other three species can be played by actors.

"(The aquatics are) like dolphins and whales," Braga said. "When they're in meetings, they have to live in a big tank, in a big and murky tank. When the aquatics and the insectoids speak, of course, there's going to have to be subtitles, because the languages are just too weird."
