Another Spike Weighs In On TNN Battle
PLUS: Court date set for 'SpikeTV' hearing
Does Spike Lee have a case against Viacom-owned TNN, who wanted to change its name to SpikeTV earlier this month? The son of legendary music satirist Spike Jones, who happens to share the same name, says no, and in fact, called the film director's lawsuit and initial success "frightening."
"I do not believe that Spike Lee owns or has any individual right to the use of the name 'Spike' or as an individual, to prevent its use by others any more than I do," said Jones Jr. to the Associated Press.
Jones father had hits in the 1940s and 1950s with songs such as "Yes, We Have No Bananas," Der Fuehrer's Face" and "Don't Hit Grandma With A Shovel."
Lee won his initial court injunction June 13. The director of such movies as "Malcolm X" and "Do the Right Thing" claimed that the new name for the cable channel was an attempt to "hijack" his name and reputation. Viacom said it chose the name as it was trying to become the first network for men. The cable channel, among its programming, includes "Star Trek: The Next Generation," and next year, "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."
Jones Jr. said that there is a biopic in the works on his father that is tentatively titled "Spike," and feels that if a court rules in the favor of Lee, it could force the Jones family to retitle their movie, although "Spike" was in their family, and made famous by their family, first.
A New York Supreme Court judge has set a tentative July 7 non-jury trial date to see if Lee has a legitimate gripe.
