'Matrix' Takes Top Box Office Spot
Falls short of 'Spider-Man' opening record
Not bad for an R-rated movie. Not bad at all.
"The Matrix: Reloaded" took in $93.3 million over the weekend, and $135.8 million over the total five days since its release, to win the top spot in the American box office over the weekend.
It's the second highest opening of all time, with last year's "Spider-Man" leading the pack with $114.8 million. However, it has become the best R-rated opening of all time, beating out "Hannibal's" $58 million take in 2001.
According to CNN, some movie theater owners said that a large number of families were seeing "Reloaded" despite its R rating.
"You had a whole legion of fans under 17 whose parents were obviously willing to take them to see this movie," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-officer tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. "You can almost call this an R-rated family film."
The take knocked "X2: X-Men United" into third place with $17.1 million. The Eddie Murphy film "Daddy Day Care" held on to second with $19.2 million. "X2" has now made $174 million in three weeks.
