'Smallville' Beats Out 'Buffy'
Overnight ratings win goes to The WB
Ever since The WB lost "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" to UPN, it has been showing dominance over its old show on Tuesday nights. As the new season for several shows began this past Tuesday night, The WB proved that not much has changed.
"Smallville" showed signs that its first season success was not a fluke as it pulled in a strong 6.3 rating/9 share, finishing in third place for the 9 p.m. hour. It beat out the ABC special "NYPD Blue: A Decade on the Job" (5.5/9) as well as "Celebrity Daredevils" on Fox (3.8/6) and the new UPN series "Haunted" (3.2/5). Beating "Smallville" was NBC's "Frasier" (13.9/21), "Hidden Hills" (10.5/16) and the "The Guardian" on CBS (9.5/15).
The seventh season premiere of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" didn't fare as well, as it finished last for the 8 p.m. hour, pulling in only a 4.0/6. It was beat not only by "The Gilmore Girls" on The WB (5.4/8), but also "JAG" on CBS (10.8/17), "8 Simple Rules" (8.1/13) and "Life With Bonnie" (7.1/11) on ABC and the two-episode debut of "In-Laws" on NBC (7.0/11).
In the overall ratings, CBS finished with a 9.8/16, winning the evening in the Overnight Metered Market Nielsen Ratings while NBC finished second with 8.8/14 and ABC third with 7.4/12. The WB moved its way into fourth place for the evening, earning a 5.9/8 while Fox trailed with a 4.5/7 and UPN came in with a dismal 3.5/5.
