Wheaton To Attend Anniversary Con
Fan support earns Wesley Crusher actor more respect.
After the people at Creation Entertainment were flooded with e-mails, faxes and other angry messages from fans, it appears that Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) will in fact be made part of the 15th anniversary of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" to be held at the end of this month in Pasadena, Calif.
"You spoke up on my, and your, behalf, and your voice was heard," Wheaton recently stated on his Web site, WilWheatonDotNet. "Think about that for a moment. Your voice was heard. You made a difference. Creation is the 800-pound gorilla of conventions. They don't have to listen to anyone. But they listened to you. They listened to us.
"That, my friends, is huge, and everyone who is reading this gets to own part of that."
Wheaton originally expressed his frustration about the Creation Entertainment event in an Aug. 28 blog entry he made on his site. There, he told his readers how he was treated as if he were not part of the family. The 29-year-old said that the organizers original request was for him to bring his sketch group along to perform, however, they were not paying what Wheaton felt the group was worth. He decided he would just come himself, but he was rejected initially.
"I put my fees into perspective, alongside the fees commanded by some of the other Trek actors," Wheaton said. "The terse answer came very quickly: 'Well, we just don't think of you as a very big part of the Trek family.' Ouch. I was an original case member on TNG. This was a 'Celebration of 15 years of TNG' convention. They'd just made several million dollars at a show in Las Vegas. Surely they could come up up a bit, negotiate a little."
Apparently Wheaton's cries were heard -- as were his fans -- and he will be hosting an autograph table at the convention, as well as being given some time to do a question and answer period.
The anniversary convention will take place Sept. 27-29, and will feature the entire original cast as well as "Star Trek: Nemesis" writer John Logan and "Star Trek: First Contact" guest star James Cromwell.
