ABC is going for event television with "V," and so far it seems to be working.
The series premiere of the 1980s series reboot attracted nearly 14 million viewers, and made the top 10 for the first week of sweeps. But can that success continue? After Tuesday's episode, there will be only two more before spring, with ABC hoping fans will stick around and watch to watch more despite the break.
Morena Baccarin, who plays the Visitors leader Anna, said she knows viewers will be back for more, no matter how long they have to wait.
"It's kind of amazing to put it out there in such a big way," Baccarin told Airlock Alpha. "To have these four episodes that we could spend so much time on, and being able to make them big and epic, we know it will make a huge impact. And then to be able to go away for a few months and leave people really wanting more, that's the key. Make a big impact and then come back with a bang."
Baccarin is enjoying her character of Anna, short hair and all. And while viewers of the premiere already know that some similarities exist between the original program from Kenneth Johnson and this remake -- right down to the motherships floating over major cities and the aliens being a bit, shall we say, scaly -- this new series will definitely head into its own direction now that the premiere is out of the way.
"It's a reimagining of the original, but I wouldn't look too deep or too far into actual things in the original," Baccarin said. "It's the same basic premise, but we had to update some things to make it more relevant to today's audience. So there are things that are different."
Baccarin says she has a lot admiration for the masterful character that inspired Anna, the diabolical Diana played by Jane Badler.
"The Diana character was evil," Baccarin said. "But for Anna, there is a little subtlety and manipulation that she can use to reach out to a broader audience. And it's a little scary when she's saying, 'Trust me. I'm ready to help you.'"
Unlike some other remakes, the new "V" really reaches out to both the original audience, and those who maybe weren't familiar with the Johnson epic.
"I think that people who are fans of the original are going to really love it. And newer fans are going to love it," Baccarin said. "It's a story that's not just about sci-fi and spaceships and aliens and all that. Elizabeth [Mitchell's] character's relationship with her son is really fascinating. And the priest (Joel Gretsch) and the conflict of faith that we bring up in the show. And the Visitors. Who are they and what are they going to do?"
Many of these questions were asked in the series premiere, and maybe some will be answered in the next batch of episodes, or maybe we'll get more to add to the list.
Either way, you can find out directly by watching "V" Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
