Back in 1965, NBC decided to do something no network to that point had ever done before: They decided to spend the money on a second pilot for this show from Gene Roddenberry called "Star Trek."

They had watched "The Cage," and thought that audiences at the time would not get the deep story it had to tell. They wanted something a little more action-oriented, and got that with "Where No Man Has Gone Before."

In an effort to get a greenlight for the series, Roddenberry himself screened a rough cut of the second pilot to NBC executives, and what they saw was different from what would eventually appear on film.

No one had seen this rough cut in more than 40 years, until a German film collector uncovered it. Now CBS Home Entertainment is offering it on its Season 3 Blu-ray release of the original series on Dec. 15.
